Step 1: Break Your House Into Geometric Shapes

Houses are rarely single continuous rectangles. To calculate material accurately, walk around the exterior with a 100-foot tape measure (or laser measure) and break every wall elevation into two basic geometric shapes:

  • Rectangles: The main body of every wall from the foundation up to the eave line.
  • Triangles (Gables): The triangular wall sections extending above the eave line up into the roof peak.
  • Dormers & Bump-Outs: Separate smaller rectangular and triangular sections.
Wall Width (W)Height (H)Gable Peak (P)
Figure 1: Measurement breakdown showing base rectangular wall (W × H), triangular gable peak (0.5 × W × P), and window/door cutout deductions.

Step 2: Calculate Rectangular Wall Square Footage

For each wall, multiply the wall width (length) by the eave height:

Wall Area (sq ft) = Width (ft) × Height (ft)

For example, a home with two 40-foot walls and two 30-foot walls, all with a 10-foot eave height:

  • Front & Back: 2 walls × (40 ft × 10 ft) = 800 sq ft
  • Left & Right: 2 walls × (30 ft × 10 ft) = 600 sq ft
  • Total Rectangular Wall Area: 1,400 sq ft

Step 3: Calculate Triangular Gable End Areas

Gable walls have a triangular peak above the eave height. The area of a triangle is half the base multiplied by the peak height:

Gable Area (sq ft) = 0.5 × Base Width (ft) × Peak Height (ft)

If the two 30-foot side walls have gable ends with an 8-foot peak above the eave line:

  • Each Gable: 0.5 × 30 ft × 8 ft = 120 sq ft
  • Both Gables: 2 × 120 sq ft = 240 sq ft

Step 4: Deduct Windows, Doors, and Large Openings

Measure all windows and exterior doors from the outer brickmold/casing:

Opening TypeStandard DimensionsArea per OpeningQuantityTotal Deducted Area
Entry Door3' 0" × 7' 0"21 sq ft121 sq ft
Standard Windows3' 0" × 5' 0"15 sq ft8120 sq ft
Garage Door16' 0" × 7' 0"112 sq ft1112 sq ft
Total Openings Deducted:253 sq ft

Step 5: Apply Waste Factor & Convert to Siding Squares

Calculate your net square footage and add a realistic waste factor (10% standard, or 12-15% for multi-gable homes):

  • Net Area: (1,400 + 240) - 253 = 1,387 sq ft
  • Gross Area with 10% Waste: 1,387 × 1.10 = 1,525.7 sq ft
  • Siding Squares Needed: 1,525.7 ÷ 100 = 15.3 Squares

Summary Siding Calculation Formula

Gross Squares = ( (Σ Wall Area + Σ Gable Area - Σ Openings) × (1 + Waste%) ) ÷ 100

Final Material Order Verification

Scenario: A complete siding order for 15.3 squares of Double 4-inch vinyl lap siding.

Step 1: Cartons of Siding8 Cartons (16 Squares)

15.3 squares ÷ 2 squares per carton = 7.65 -> round up to 8 cartons

Step 2: Starter Strip14 Starter Strips

40 + 40 + 30 + 30 = 140 linear feet ÷ 10 ft pieces = 14 pieces

Step 3: J-Channel Trim16 J-Channels (12.5-ft)

Window/door perimeters (160 LF) + gable rakes (34 LF) = 194 LF ÷ 12.5 ft = 16 pieces

Takeaway: Ordering 8 cartons of siding and 16 pieces of J-channel ensures a full material takeoff with zero jobsite work stoppages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure wall height if ground is sloping?

Measure from the top of the foundation (where the siding starter strip will attach) up to the underside of the eave soffit at multiple points along the wall, and use the average height for rectangular wall calculations.

Do you deduct garage doors from siding area?

Yes. A standard 16-foot by 7-foot two-car garage door accounts for 112 square feet of opening area. Subtracting large garage doors avoids ordering over a full siding square of unneeded material.

How do I convert square footage to siding squares?

Divide your total gross square footage by 100. For example, 1,650 square feet of wall area equals 16.5 siding squares.
